Cori believes in environmental justice for the people of St. Louis. Overwhelmingly, underserved and underrepresented communities experience devastating health and environmental hazards. Cori is a strong advocate for inclusion and the ability of citizens to have a say in matters that may adversely affect their health and home environment. As a seasoned community activist, she will fight for a clean environment, push for green energy training and jobs, and promote STEM education that promotes the importance of preparation for innovative 21st century jobs.
+ Justice reform
Cori cannot and will not sit quiet while injustice remains unchecked. She marched in the streets of Ferguson to protest the killing of Michael Brown, suffering police brutality herself in the process. Just as protesters were unfairly treated as enemy combatants by a police force equipped with military grade weaponry, too often our communities are decimated by a school to prison pipeline that unjustly prioritizes imprisonment, rather than reform. Cori will fight to end mass incarceration, subsidies for private prisons, and the cash bail system. She will push for environmental justice and the decriminalization of substance use. She will also fight to demilitarize the police force and provide more resources for education and recidivism programs. Cori will work to provide a true pathway for positive re-entry into society so that offenders can become actively engaged, contributing members of their communities.
St. Louis students deserve a quality education regardless of their zip code. Cori will work to increase support services for our youth to help them succeed, such as policies that promote restorative approaches over punitive approaches to school discipline. Cori strongly supports cultural competency and trauma-informed training for school faculty and staff to mitigate suspension and expulsion, that ultimately lead to high drop-out rates in St. Louis. Cori understands the importance of proper nutrition for our children to be equipped to excel in school. Cori knows that it is tough for kids to learn when they are hungry and will make sure kids are properly fed with healthy school and summer breakfast and lunch programs. In addition, Cori supports free college tuition for community colleges and state universities because she believes that students should be rewarded for their hard work and not burdened with student loan debt. Cori will work hard to make sure that higher education is within reach for all students and will work tirelessly to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.
+ Economic opportunity
Cori is committed to expanding job training programs connecting talent to opportunity. She will fight for workers’ rights to unionize and earn a living wage to ensure that there is economic opportunity for all. Cori will fight poverty, work to put an end to predatory lending, and help to develop a clean energy economy and infrastructure.
This is about justice and basic human decency. If you work full time, you shouldn’t live in poverty. Cori knows what it feels like to be homeless and she knows what it means to be undervalued and underpaid in the workplace. Cori fought her way out of homelessness and will fight for a minimum living wage of $15 for all workers. Recognizing that a living wage for all can alleviate the stress of wondering how to pay a bill or how to clothe and feed your children, Cori will fight for the people of District 1 and the entire state of Missouri to thrive. Furthermore, we support strong unions and collective bargaining. We understand that strong unions support the varied interests of workers, from ensuring fair wages to protecting workers by fighting for safe working conditions.
Cori has devoted her life to helping people meet their healthcare needs. From working as a registered nurse to serving as an advocate for mental health and childcare, she has consistently made the health and wellbeing of others a top priority. As an elected representative, she would support medicare for all, ensuring that families no longer need to break their backs and deplete their savings simply to meet their health care needs. And she would bring the mental health care debate out of the shadows, so that the problem can be dealt with rather than ignored. The United States should catch up to every other modern nation and implement a single-payer, medicare-for-all system. There’s no reason we can’t be #1 in the world instead of #37. It’s time to end the destruction of American healthcare by rapacious, price gouging, for-profit, private health insurance middlemen.
Homelessness and lack of affordable housing are barriers not only in St. Louis but across the country, in both rural and urban areas. Cori will support smart policies to house everyone, regardless of income or background.
+ Police reform
Cori was on the front lines of Ferguson fighting for justice after the killing of Mike Brown. Since then, she has continued to be an advocate for police reform and accountability. Working to demilitarize the police and increasing effective de-escalation trainings are a high priority
